ASL for Hard of Hearing and Non-Native Signers
At DEAF, Inc. we recognize that some Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened individuals share a special kinship based on their life experiences and benefit the most when they learn ASL with their peers. ARES offers ASL classes for Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened individuals, and for Deaf people whose native language is a foreign sign language, or Deaf signers with atypical language (typically due to not having received a strong foundation for language in their early development years). Taught by a Deaf instructor, ARES’s Zoom-based ASL classes run for 8-10 weeks and are available to any ARES consumer.
DEAF, Inc. also offers community-based ASL classes for conventional learners through the ASL Education program. These classes are open to all, and are offered in-person and through Zoom. For more information, please visit our ASL Education page.

ARES consumers who hold legal permanent resident status, have their green card, and meet the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) eligibility requirements for naturalization can take our Deaf-accessible U.S. Citizenship preparation class.
Led by a Deaf instructor with immigration and naturalization experience, our Zoom-based classes and study groups foster an accessible learning environment in which you can learn about U.S. history, customs, and traditions to prepare for the naturalization test and interview.
ARES Advocates can support you to find accessible assistance completing the N-400 form (the application for naturalization), and advocate for you as you navigate through the process of becoming a naturalized citizen.
Another way that ARES supports Deaf immigrants in their journey to citizenship is by increasing access to citizenship information in ASL. In 2024, ARES will release ASL vlogs of all 100 U.S. citizenship test questions, plus other essential citizenship resources from USCIS. To visit these resources, click here.
If you are currently receiving services from ARES and wish to take any of the classes offered by ARES, contact your ARES Advocate. For eligible individuals not yet receiving ARES services, please contact the Front Desk to make a referral.
